Update XIV
Happy to report that "Back To Where I Belong" is all finished, apart from mixing & mastering which will all be done at the end. It's changed a bit from where it started. Still trip hop, nice acoustic guitars all mashed up, vinyl emulator to trap an old style sound, which all breaks down before building back up with vocals and distorted guitars. And I've managed to get the guitar solo in at the end which I'm sure will please some member of the band :)
One thing I've always wanted to do was get a shepherd tone into a tune. A shepherd tone is where it feels like the sound is going up and up and never stops going up. Or going down and down and never gets to the bottom. It's pretty cool. There are loads of YouTube videos out there which explain how it is done, but it is essentially a combination of the same sound layered up all pitch shifting and with velocity changes. There is a VST FX called Corkscrew which should do the job, but when I tried it out it felt like some of the quality was lost and I could hear the layers interacting with each other.
So I programmed it myself, which was fun :
